UC WEBMASTERS COMPETES IN CHINA

CEBU City, the hotbed of basketball in the Visayas, will have the rare distinction of representing the country in the coming 26th Summer Universiade basketball competitions scheduled Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China.

This was announced during the formal presentation of the University of Cebu Webmasters as the country’s official representative during a media launch at the Hotel Fortuna in Cebu City last May 21.

Led by 6-11 Cebu sensation Junmar Fajardo and handled by coach Roehl Gomez, the UC Webmasters were formally introduced by newly-elected Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) president Sen. Antonio Trillanes and Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) president David Ong.

The Webmasters were personally handpicked by FESSAP officers to represent the country in the Universiade for winning the 63rd National Students Basketball Championship early this year.

In Shenzhen, the Philippines is bracketed in Group C with 2009 runner-up Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Japan and New Zealand in the four-group, 24-nation tournament. “It’s a tough group, but we’ll do our best,” said Gomez, who also powered the UC Webmasters to the CESSAFI title this year, breaking a nine-year reign by the University of the Visayas.

More than 13,000 athletes, coaches and officials from a record-setting 188 countries will attend the Shenzhen Universiade, which will be held from August 12-23 this year. The young and booming city of Shenzhen spent 2 billion yuan (rmb), or the equivalent of 324 million U.S. dollars, to build 41 sporting venues for the Summer Universiade.
