A CALL TO ACTION

Herein lies the paradox of under/unemployment among Registered Filipino Nurses with 101 million Filipinos needing health services but because of the scarcity of government funds and resources the Filipino nurses could not provide the supposed access to health / nursing services.

Sadly, in 2007, this part of the world got affected by the Asian Financial Crisis. Then in 2008, the World Financial Crisis resulted to a situation wherein the Philippines registered a surplus in its national nursing supply of 150,000.

In 2009, when we have not made rational deployment of these surplus of nursing reserves, 69,617 passed the nurse licensure exams (NLE), in July of 2010 another 37,679 passed NLE, in December 2010, 29,711 registered nurses were again added.

To date we have 287,007 RNs who are either underemployed or totally unemployed, or strictly unproductive as professionals simply seeking jobs. Sometime this August (2011) the Board of Nursing would be releasing the results of the July 2-3, 2011 NLE. That would be an additional surplus of registered nurses.

With these pressing conditions, Board of Nursing Marco Antonio Sto Tomas, BON Lead for Local Linkages called for an urgent meeting for a Call to Action in Response to the Consistently Growing Nursing Unemployment Among Pinoy Nurses.
