This is what Earth Hour is all about — it is a symbolic act to inspire humanity to initiate actions that would address the impacts of climate change, and it all began with the simple act of switching off lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m yesterday, March 27, 2010 actively joined by the volunteers of Community Extension Services and Development of UC Banilad College of Nursing. This is the hour that the world is united in its call for actions that promote responsible consumption of energy and advocate for changes in attitudes, behaviors, and lifestyles to help mitigate or adapt to the impact of climate change.
The message of Earth Hour should not stop with the switching of lights. Its message should resonate beyond one hour. The 60 minutes that comprised Earth Hour should be considered as a start — a new beginning that entailed switching to energy efficient lighting such as compact fluorescent lamps or to cleaner sources of energy such as renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, ocean, and biomass), all with the goal of minimizing the human carbon footprint and addressing the climate change crisis.
Kudos to the UC Nursing CESDEV and its volunteers for their strong support to this noble and timely campaign.
