A little over six years after his death, Pope John Paul II will be beatified at the St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, Rome at 10:00 a.m. (4:00 p.m. Philippine time) during a Eucharistic celebration led by his successor, Pope Benedict XVI.
The solemn rites will be witnessed by millions in Rome and covered live by major networks around the world including Catholic Church TV stations: Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN), GMA, and ABS-CBN. The beatification date is held on Divine Mercy Sunday, a celebration introduced by the venerable Pope John Paul II.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma issued a circular letter requesting the faithful to celebrate the occasion through prayers. He will lead a prayer service to be held in front of the statue of Pope John Paul II at the Archbishop's Residence at D. Jakosalem Street in Cebu City at 8 p.m. today. “We know that indeed he (Pope John Paul II) is a blessing to us in our times,” Palma said in an interview with reporters. Archbishop-Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal will be attending the beatification rites in Rome.
