A 21-year-old nursing graduate was crowned Miss Cebu last night in a pageant that celebrated heritage and the value of cultural history. Reena Elena Malinao won over 11 other contestants, who walked the stage in dramatic, designer gowns at the Waterfront Lahug Hotel.
It was Malinao's fourth time to join a beauty contest and her first time to win one. She said her role ahead as a goodwill ambassador meant being a role model for women.
“A beauty queen fights for what is right and stands for what she thinks is best for everyone even if that means less popularity. A beauty queen stands for femininity and good citizens of the country,” she said in the question-and-answer segment.
Five finalists were asked: In the light of all the challenges the Philippines is facing today, what is the social responsibility of a beauty queen?
The top prize include P50, 000 cash and a trip to Hong Kong and Las Vegas. Other winners in the annual pageant, a highlight of the Sinulog week festivities in Cebu, are Ma. Gresa Lugo - 1st runner up, Ma. Eliza Zosa - 2nd runner, Rogeli Catacutan - 3rd runner up and Carole Monique de Leon - 4th runner up.
