AULD LANG SYNE

"Auld Lang Syne" (Scots pronunciation: [ˈɔːld lɑŋˈsəin]: note "s" rather than "z")[1] is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788[2] and set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294). It is well known in many English-speaking (and other) countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight.

The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago",[3] "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, is loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times".

The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" is also used in similar poems by Robert Ayton (1570–1638), Allan Ramsay (1686–1757), and James Watson (1711) as well as older folk songs predating Burns.[4] Matthew Fitt uses the phrase "In the days of auld lang syne" as the equivalent of "Once upon a time..." in his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KAREN!

WE ARE MADE FOR SERVICE

We are made for service
to care for all men
We are made for love
both time and again
A love that will live
through sorrow and pain
A love that will
never die with strain.

God sent His son
to show us the way
One who shared His love
every minute of the day
One who gave His life
that we might live
And His Spirit to help us
through the years.

Life can be so lonely
when nobody cares
Life can be so empty
when nobody shares
But if man gives himself
to help other men
The happiness of Christ
will live within.

BEFORE WE TOOK THE HOLIDAY BREAK ...

All first year student nurses of UC Banilad had to plant malunggay seeds in a mini-nursery or seedling bank at the Parking Lot in Sitio Baca hoping that by the time we all come back after the holiday break, the seeds would have already germinated. This activity is in relation to the Third Wave of Malunggay Planting in our adopted community, Barangay Kalunasan.

To our blog followers, you may recall that we launched this activity last January 2009 where student nurses planted malunggay cuttings along the side of the road. The launching was the First Wave of the program.

This program had its Second Wave when CESDEV NUrsing coordinated with Kalunasan Elementary School to plant malunggay within the premises of the school participated by their pupils.

The Third Wave will involve house-to-house distribution of malunggay seedlings as well as information dissemination about the value of malunggay. This activity is targeted for the first quarter of 2011.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TINA!

IN GOD'S WAY

God's greatest expression of love
is Emmanuel (Jn3:16).
But God exhorts us to be blessings
to our brethren as well (1Jn3:16).
His model is Jesus who comes
NOT TO BE SERVED BUT TO SERVE.
Therefore as followers of Jesus
(Christ-ians we are)
we have to live and act
according to His will
and everyday be able to say,
"I DO IT GOD'S WAY..
NO LONGER MY WAY."

THE FINEST OF ARTS

Nursing is an art:
and if it is to be made an art,
It requires an exclusive devotion
as hard a preparation,
as any painter's or sculptor's work;
for what is the having to do with
dead canvas or dead marble,
compared with having to do
the temple of God's spirit?
It is one of the Fine Arts:
I had almost said,

FROM PAM ...

FEW INCIDENTS OF FIRE CRACKER INCIDENTS NOTED

Fewer firecracker-related injuries were recorded in Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas during the Christmas celebration, the Department of Health in the region reported.

There were 12 cases of firecracker injuries reported by the hospitals in Metro Cebu, which include those in the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue, said DoH 7 regional director Susana Madarieta on Saturday.

Last 2009, 18 persons were injured by firecracker and pyrotechnic blasts during the Christmas celebration alone.

Madarieta said there were also no reported cases of stray bullet incidents for the Christmas Eve revelries in the Central Visayas provinces of Cebu, Negros Oriental, Bohol, and Siquijor. Madarieta said she hoped the trend would continue up to the New Year celebration.

She attributed the decreasing trend to three factors. First, the strict regulation of the different local government units in selling firecrackers. In Cebu City, for example, the sale of firecrackers is only allowed along the strip facing the sea inside the South Road Properties (SRP), a reclamation property owned by the city government.

The other factor could be the DoH’s Oplan Iwas Paputok which was largely attributed for the people’s high awareness regarding the negative effects of using firecrackers. Third, she said, the people might have opted to spend their money for food and other important things.

SYMPHONY OF LIGHTS IN AYALA

Making the most of my Christmas break, we roamed all over metropolis and went to another must go place this Christmas season which is the Christmas Symphony Of Lights At Ayala Triangle Gardens.

Known as the Makati Market, a distinct spot of green in the middle of the busy streets of Makati, the triangle is bordered by Ayala, Paseo and Makati Avenues. Here, often seen in the morning are joggers with their ipods enjoying the fresh air the morning has to offer. It was unveiled last year and since then the park has been the chill out place of most Makati workers.

This year’s main attraction is the symphony of christmas lights where clean and marvelous fun unfolded as we watched the lights dance in a well coordinated and choreographed sequence to the beat of the music. Watch the video above and enjoy!

PERSONAL NOTE FROM OUR FAMILY

This Christmas season,
May you be blessed
With the spirit of the season,
which is peace,
The gladness of the season,
which is hope,
And the heart of the season,
which is love.

TAKE TIME TO PRAY

I got up early one morning
and rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish,
I didn't have time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me
and grew heavier with each task;
Why doesn't God help me, I wondered;
He answered, "You didn't ask."

I wanted to see joy and beauty,
but the day toiled on, gray and bleak;
I wondered why God didn't show me -
He said, "But you didn't seek."

I tried to come into God's presence;
I used all my keys at the lock;
God gently and lovingly chided,
"My child, you didn't knock."

I woke up early this morning
and paused before entering the day;
I had so much to accomplish that
I had to take time to pray.

WARM GREETINGS!

This year, a lot were achieved because of your continued support.

I would like to personally extend my deepest gratitude to all UC Nursing CESDEV Volunteers for always being ready to render service and help to those who are in need.

The same appreciation goes to all student nurses for being service-oriented. May you continue to serve the people in the community.

May this Christmas season and the coming new year bring more joy to our lives so we can share more to those who have less. God bless us all and more power!

MISA DE GALLO

Misa de Gallo is the Spanish phrase for Midnight mass, more literally translated as "Rooster's Mass".

It is said that the "Rooster's Mass" owes its name to the idea that a rooster would have been among the first to witness the birth of Jesus, and thus be the one to announce it.

In most Spanish speaking countries, La Misa del Gallo entails a typical midnight mass, starting at around 12:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve. To see "La Misa Del Gallo" clearly go to Montserrat, high in the mountain near Barcelona.

In the Philippines, the prayer is done early morning on Christmas Eve, and it is the last day of a nine-day ritual known as Simbang Gabi. Completing the nine days culminating with the Misa de Gallo is equal to a wish come true, and many Filipinos believe this centuries-old promise to this day.

One of the customs related to the Philippine Misa de Gallo is the selling of traditional Philippine food, such as puto bumbong (a purple colored rice pastry, seasoned with grated--coconut and brown sugar), tsokolate (a hot chocolate drink), bibingka (flour and egg cakes cooked on top and under), and salabat, or ginger tea, which are sold by vendors to the faithful outside churches.

THE FIRST NOEL

NOEL

Noel (or noël, sometimes written as nowell in English) is an alternate word for Christmas. The word comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas" which derives from the Old French word noël, a variant of nael. The Latin origin is the word natalis ("birth").

According to the 18th century Irish linguist and historian Charles Vallencey, a more ancient common origin appears in the Hebrew word nolah (Hebrew letters nuwn waw lamed he), meaning "to bring forth young." Subsequently, the Irish named December Mi Nolagh[citation needed], meaning "the month of the newborn." The Irish word for Christmas day was simply Nolagh.[1]

SILENT NIGHT

HOLIDAYS FOR DECEMBER 2010

Two long weekends await the public this Christmas season as President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Saturday that he would adhere to the “holiday economics” law of the previous administration, which declared December 24 and 31 as special non-working holidays.

The President said that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s Proclamation 1841 declared 10 regular holidays, four special non-working holidays, and a special holiday for 2010.

“Nakalagay na po ‘yan doon sa batas na ipinairal, eh. So andoon na rin ‘yung detalye, pero palagay ko kasama ‘yon (Dec. 24 and 31). Hindi ko lang alam kung hanggang saan (It’s in the law which is in effect. I just don’t know the exact details but I think those dates are included),” Aquino said in a chance interview after attending the Nationwide Barangay Assembly in Barangay Central Plaza this city on Sunday.

Proclamation 1841 stated that regular holidays for December 2010 include New Year’s Day (January 1), Christmas Day (December 25, Saturday), and Rizal Day (December 27, Monday nearest December 30).

The same proclamation included December 24 (Christmas eve) and December 31, the last day of the year, as special non-working days for December 2010.

Under Republic Act 9492 or the so-called holiday economics law holidays, except those that are religious in nature, are moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order, or proclamation.

LAY YOUR WORRIES DOWN

"Worry not about the possible troubles of the future; for if they come, you are but anticipating and adding to their weight; and if they do not come, your worry is useless; and in either case it is weak and in vain, and a distrust of GOD'S PROVIDENCE. Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its JOY."

HOMECOURT FOR THE PNLE

Cebu posted the highest number of applicants for the December 2010 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination. Based on the statistical data released by the Application Division of the Professional Regulations Commission, Cebu has a total of 8,033 applicants or examinees.

This population necessitates that ample number of rooms will be readied for this purpose. The Professional Regulations Commission has identified University of Cebu - Banilad Campus, University of Cebu - Main Campus, University of Cebu - Lapulapu Mandaue Campus, University of Cebu - METC, and Southwestern University as the venues for the examination.

University of Cebu - Banilad College of Nursing graduates who were to take the Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination in UC Banilad were relaxed and at ease for they feel that they were just "back home".

Such comfort, ease, and relaxed feeling proved to be very helpful - a homecourt advantage to our graduates. :)

THE FIRE THAT BURNED THE DREAMS OF NURSING HOPEFULS

Fifteen people, including nine nursing school graduates who were hours away from taking the two-day licensure examinations, were confirmed killed when fire hit a budget hotel and a semi-commercial building in Tuguegarao City early Sunday morning.

Senior Superintendent Mao Aplasca, Cagayan Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said the fire broke out at 1 a.m., initially trapping most of the victims in the two buildings at the corner of Luna and Mabini Streets in downtown Tuguegarao City.

The fire reportedly started at a residential-commercial building and then jumped to the five-story Bed and Breakfast Pension House where the nursing school graduates were staying in preparation for the nursing board exam which started Sunday.

Superintendent Pedro Martirez, chief of the Tuguegarao City Police, said the bodies of the nine male nursing school graduates from the University of La Sallete in Isabela City were retrieved along with six others. The charred remains of a couple who owned one of the destroyed buildings and their two grandchildren were also among the fatalities.

Martirez identified six of the fatalities as Norman Fondevilla, Anniedel Fondevilla, Mildred de Leon, Karylle de Leon, Josh de Leon, and a certain Jen, reportedly the househelp.

“All the victims were trapped in the two buildings. They were burned beyond recognition. Most of the victims were already identified through their relatives and companions,” said Martirez.

TABOR BOYS SINGING THE UC HYMN

As the UC graduate nurses from Tabor Hills were cruising Gov. Cuenco Avenue on their way to the examination venue, they passed by University of Cebu - Banilad Campus.

In chorus, they all sang the UC Hymn and shouted their anxieties away - confident in their hearts and minds that they are in full-gear for the challenge that awaits them.

SO SWEET, SO THOUGHTFUL, SO GOLDILOCKS!

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR DECEMBER 2010 PNLE

Here are some of the tips shared by PNLE Topnotchers. We hope these could help. Best regards!

1. Strictly FOLLOW all the rules, instructions or directions like the dress code. It sounds really boring but it maybe one of the reasons why you probably won’t be allowed to take the test.

2. Be CAREFUL in ripping/tearing each answer sheet. Try to fold it before tearing and guide it using your hand (or a ruler if you have one). Use the bottom sheet first because this is usually used for NP1 (and it is easier to tear off).

3. Don’t mix up your ANSWER SHEETS. Although the bar code at the lower left part corresponds to the student, it is better to be sure.

4. Label everything correctly and don’t put any unnecessary marks, etc.

5. As much as you can, DON’T ERASE.

6. LISTEN attentively to what the room watcher says. Also, there’s nothing wrong with asking questions or clarifying for even the tiny details. Don’t hesitate to speak up but only when necessary.

7. Try to EAT normally even if most people don’t have any appetite during stressful situations. Don’t drink too little or too much water and don’t try eating food that might upset your stomach.

8. Use black BALLPEN for all the writing or printing tasks and PENCIL for all the shading.

9. Don't forget to bring your Notice of Admission (NOA).

GOD BLESS YOU ALL! AIM HIGH UC NURSES!

O HOLY NIGHT

SIMBANG GABI STARTS TODAY

SIMBANG GABI is one of the longest and most popular among the Filipino traditions in the country. It is when Catholic churches across the nation start to open their doors shortly before the break of dawn to welcome the faithful to the Simbang Gabi mass.

Simbang Gabi or Mass at Dawn is a nine-day novena to the Blessed Mother. The novena begins December 16 as early as 4 in the morning and culminates with the “Misa de Gallo” on Christmas Eve to welcome the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. In some churches, the panuluyan is reenacted showing the effort of Joseph and Mary to find a suitable birthplace.

Simbang Gabi has become one of the most popular traditions in the country. But it is not just a tradition that is celebrated because we need to do so. It is a significant moment not only because it strengthens relationships among family members but also because it is the time where our faith is intensified. This is the time where we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. It does not matter if one has the stamina to complete the novena or not, what really matters is what is inside the heart. The blessing does not depend on the number of mass attended, but what is important is the disposition of the person who receives the Lord’s blessing.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

Caroling is a part of the Filipino Christmas tradition. Once the Dawn Mass known as "Misa de Gallo" or "Simbang Gabi " starts, carolers will be on their feet singing Christmas carols from house to house spreading the spirit of the season through songs.

Children like to form groups and enjoy hopping from one house to another every night singing Jingle Bells, Silent Night and traditional Filipino Christmas songs like Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit, Pasko Na Naman, at Namamasko.

They usually have handmade musical instruments like tambourine, made from bottle tops, cans or biscuit tins used as drums. They will be happy if you give them a coin or if your feeling generous a peso or more will make them sing another song for you.

And this is what they sing to thank you for your generosity... "Thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo ...thank you...."

As CESDEV Nursing's way of thanking all of you for your continued support and dedication, starting tomorrow, this blog will be posting beautiful Christmas songs performed by the Celtic Woman. This is our simple way of saying ... "Thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo ...thank you...."

THE CELTIC WOMAN

Celtic Woman is the realisation of a dream for Composer and Musical Director, David Downes and Show Producer, Sharon Browne. Together with Dave Kavanagh, Executive Producer of the Show, they created Celtic Woman to feature the very special talents of four young Irish female vocalists and a very exciting young fiddle player. The five women vocalists, Chloe, Lisa, Meav and Órla and fiddle player Mairead are led by David Downes, a prodigious young Irish talent, who has previously worked as musical director of Riverdance. Celtic Woman portrays the unique voices and styles of each of the girls as soloists as well as fantastic ensemble numbers.

This PRC Office Order explains why I am out of quarantine... this is due to a "special assignment" however for all purposes ...and intent let me emphasize that in keeping with our Code of Conduct as PRB members I AM PRACTICING SELF-RESTRAINT and shall not in anyway delve on queries directly affecting the coming NLE and for true friends and allies I expect you to do the same so that together we may continue to preserve the integrity of OUR NURSES' LICENSURE EXAMINATION. I believe this much we can do for our profession. God bless Philippine Nursing.

THANKS FOR THE HONOR AND PRIDE!

CREATE RIPPLES OF KINDNESS

Your single good deed,
big or small,
can inspire others
and cause a ripple effect of kindness
that continues to grow
as others join in.
Start something today —
the more people who take action,
the larger your ripple will become.

SPREADING KINDNESS IN ALOGUINSAN

CESDEV Nursing would like to thank all the student nurse volunteers and everyone who joined the Medical Mission in Aloguinsan, Cebu.

Services that were rendered to the community members of Barangay Sto. Rosario include Circumcision, Pap Smear, Feeding, Deworming, Adult and Pediatric Consultation, Free Medicines, Dental Services, and Foot Reflexology. These were made possible through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Cebu South.

Ripples of kindness were showered in Barangay Sto. Rosario, Aloguinsan, Cebu. Be inspired and do the same in your community.

SPREAD KINDNESS ONLINE

This holiday season, Yahoo! is encouraging people to do random acts of kindness and go online to create a virtual ripple of kindness. As part of the How Good Grows campaign, Yahoo! has set up the “Ripples of Kindness” website. People can log on to the site and document their charitable acts. This way, they can inspire others to do the same.

Yahoo! Philippines has tapped 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida and the Dynamic Teen Company to lead the campaign in the country. To make kindness “viral,” Peñaflorida and his team will be documenting their good deeds on the Yahoo! Ripples of Kindness microsite using their Y! Mail account, KuyaEf_and_DTC@yahoo.com. People can follow Efren’s kindness activities at http://kindness.yahoo.com/Ju-kz/1knd-dw.

“We are happy to join hands with Yahoo! for this campaign. I am happy to encourage people from all walks of life to do small acts of kindness and inspire greatness. Together with the Dynamic Teen Company, I have a mission to make small but significant difference in lives of others. Collectively we can make the positive change our world needs,” said Peñaflorida, “You do not need a celebrity status or have a position in Congress to touch the lives of others and this campaign shares that sentiment.”

The site enables people to share their status messages across other social networks such as Yahoo! Updates, Facebook, and Twitter. Filipinos can watch their ripple of kindness grow on the site, as they inspire others to do the same. Ideas on what constitutes a random act of kindness include: donating clothes, feeding street children, or paying transportation fares for strangers. The kind acts don’t need to be grand—they just need to come from the heart.

“Each year Yahoo! helps raise awareness about the importance of year-end giving. This year, we are proud to have Efren Peñaflorida and the Dynamic Teen Company as partners for the Yahoo! Ripples of Kindness campaign. Efren is a perfect example of how a regular person can make a big difference in the lives of others through small acts of generosity and, with him onboard, we hope to inspire the same from other Filipinos,” explained Jack Madrid, Yahoo! Philippines Country Manager.
