Yellow flowers peppered the simple tomb of former President Corazon "Cory" Cojuangco Aquino, as her family and friends commemorated her second death anniversary. "I can't help but...I really miss my mother," President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino said in his speech.
Aquino said although he is occupied with a lot of tasks, he still remembers the pain of losing his mother. He notes that he occasionally asks his mother for guidance and that it is comforting to know that his parents have always been there. "I'm comforted by the fact that we are really going on the 'tuwid na landas' route," Aquino said.
Catholic priest Catalino Arevalo, an Aquino family friend, emotionally recalled how Cory's last days were. He said that as Cory suffered from colon cancer, she exemplified a great deal of faith. "At the depth of her suffering, there was the depth of her faith. We don't want to forget her beauty, her greatness," said Arevalo.
Pinky Aquino Abellada said they still miss their mom but they have nothing left to do. Ballsy Aquino-Cruz meanwhile said they know the late president is guiding their brother as he leads the country. After the mass, supporters and friends of the former president sang "Bayan Ko."
Cory's death awakened calls for justice and for an end in corruption, which later catapulted his only son to power. Cory succumbed to colon cancer on Aug 1, 2009. Millions of Filipinos mourned her death, the funeral march lasting for 12 hours.
In one of her Tweets on Sunday, actress Kris Aquino remembered her mother. "Tomorrow is mom's 2nd death anniversary, her bilin that I always make time for my sons is firmly planted in my being!" she said.
Vice President Jejomar Binay, a staunch Aquino supporter, said the former president continues to inspire Pinoys. "President Cory Aquino continues to inspire all of us for her faith in God and the Filipino people. She epitomized commitment to the public good and an unshakeable belief in the capacity of Filipinos to rise above poverty," Binay said in a statement.
