OSMENA DAY: HOLIDAY!

Today marks the 131st anniversary of Cebu's Grand Old Man, the late president Sergio Osmeña Sr.

Don Sergio began his 42-long career in public service in 1904. He served as Cebu's youngest governor at 25, and four years later beame the speaker of the First Philippine Assembly. He assumed the Presidency in August 1, 1944 when President Manuel Quezon died. He was the fourth president (1944-1946) of the Commonwealth of the Philippines.

There would be no work and classes in the entire Cebu Province and Cebu City today, in commemoration of the late Don Sergio Osmeña Sr.’s 131st birth anniversary.

By virtue of the Republic Act 6953, or the amended Department Order 937, which the Congress had passed in 1990, September 9 of the year is declared a special non-working holiday to give Cebuanos time to remember and commemorate the birthday of Osmeña who was dubbed as “The Great Old Man.”
