P.NOY

NOYNOY TAKES OATH AS 15TH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES

President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III may have made history as the first chief executive elected in an automated election. But do you know he holds more firsts?

In a document issued by historian and Aquino’s inauguration spokesman Manuel Quezon III, Aquino appears to hold many other firsts, including being the first never-been-married president in the country’s history.

Aquino is also the first president with no children.

Although two other former presidents Elpidio Quirino (widower) and Corazon Aquino (widow) were unmarried during their term, they had children unlike Noynoy.

Aquino is also the first president, since 1992, inaugurated into office without having been vice president. His predecessors Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo were both vice presidents before becoming Presidents.

He is also the first president to have a February birthday; first to use the suffix –III and first to have graduated from Ateneo.

Aquino also holds the record of being the youngest of the presidents who became chief executive in their 50s. His family’s adversary, former president Ferdinand Marcos came second by becoming president at age of 51.

At 50, Aquino is the 15th president. He is president at the same age at which his father, Benigno S. Aquino Jr. was assassinated.

Aquino ironically shares the Liberal Party with Arroyo’s father, Diosdado Macapagal. Aquino was the first president elected president from LP since Macapagal.

Amusingly, Aquino was also proclaimed president-elect on June 9, 2010, 9 months after his declaration of candidacy on 9/9/09.

A bullet is still embedded in Aquino’s neck, two decades after an attempt against his life during a military coup against his mother. Aquino suffered five bullet wounds while three of his bodyguards died.

HALAD SA KAPAMILYA TALKS ABOUT KAMUNGGAY

WHAT IS VOLUNTEERING ?

Volunteering is about giving your time, energy and skills freely. Unlike many things in life there is choice involved in volunteering. As a volunteer you have made a decision to help on your own accord, free from pressure to act from others. Volunteers predominantly express a sense of achievement and motivation, and this is ultimately generated from your desire and enthusiasm to help. Sometimes volunteers are regarded as do-gooders and those that hold that view also assume that one person can never make a differnece. It may be true that no one person can solve all the world’s problems, but what you can do is make that little corner of the world where you live just that little bit better.

RUN FOR BEBE

Amid the sadness of someone being stricken by a grave ailment comes this bit of good news—a community running together to help a colleague deal with the financial demand of battling cancer.

Yesterday, runners joined the Run for Bebe to raise funds for the treatment of the nasopharyngeal cancer of a Chong Hua Hospital nursing services official, a dedicated single mother of two children who had served the institution for 20 years. She faces a grueling treatment regimen of chemotherapy and her colleagues want to help by raising money to fund her medication.

The charity run was conceptualized by chief nurse Naoimi Fajardo and cardiologist and runner Alex Junia and organized by RunCheck. There were no cash prizes or even singlets. The charity run offered only personalized race bibs to the runners.

BOOK DRIVE - Phase 4, Delivery of Book Shelves

IBM SCHOLARS IN UC

SIXTEEN scholars from the University of Cebu were selected for the “Earn As You Learn” program in partnership with IBM Philippines. The scholars were presented in ceremonies attended by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who lauded the school and the program for benefitting students by ensuring their employment in the technology sector.

“We are witnessing a turning point in the development of our youth. A direct linkage between academe and private sector... we need more of these partnerships,” Osmeña said. “It's like we are planting a new seed for the future development of our city.” The outgoing mayor said the development of Cebu's labor force remains key to the city's development.

HELPING IS FUN AND FULFILLING

EARN AS YOU LEARN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM LAUNCHED

The University of Cebu, in partnership with IBM, yesterday launched the “Earn as You Learn” program in its effort to further improve the quality of Cebu’s manpower pool specifically in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. EAYL, which was first introduced in Australia prior to its entry in Cebu, is an undergraduate course that combines specialized curriculum with real-life experience in a professional IT environment.

The program, which officially kicked-off at the start of 2010-2011 school year on June 15 with 16 pioneer scholars, is also strongly supported by the Bureau of Investments (BOI). “Global demand for IT is growing now more than ever. It spurs economic growth across all industries and economies. The collaboration will help address issues that collectively impact the IT industry,” said IBM Philippines country general manager James Velasquez.

For her part, UC chancellor Candice Gotianuy said partnering with IBM, which is the fourth largest technology provider in the world, paved the way for keeping Cebu’s edge in providing top notch manpower pool in the field of IT.

“We are excited to work with one of the giants in the IT industry,” Gotianuy said yesterday during the formal launching of the program at the UC Banilad Campus, which was also the formal turnover the 16 scholars, who will take up the four-year specialized course in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña who also graced the event yesterday said that this academe-industry partnership is seen to reinforce Cebu’s position as the number one emerging BPO destination in the world.

“We have so much job vacancies, [especially in ICT/BPO sector] but the problem is we don’t have enough people who are ready for employment, the hiring rate is still so low at two percent. Therefore, it is commissioned upon us to improve the academe sector,” Osmena said.

The program, incorporated into a new degree program, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology—Professional Practice is intended to be completed over four years or eight semesters.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

FATHER'S DAY

Father's Day poses as just the perfect occasion to express feelings of gratitude and thankfulness to every dad in the world. Though the day is celebrated with utmost fervor and enthusiasm in the present times, things were not the same. Father's Day celebration had a modest beginning. The history of Father's Day dates back to 1909, in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon, at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church. The lecture inspired her to have a special day dedicated to her father, William Jackson Smart, who had brought her up and her siblings, single-handedly, after their mother died.

Sonora could realize the greatness of her father and wanted to let him know how deeply she was touched by his sacrifices, courage, selflessness and love. To pay a tribute to her great dad, Sonora held the first Father's Day celebration on 19th of June 1910, on the birthday of her father. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance. However, unlike Mother's Day, which was readily accepted, Father's Day was received with mockery and hilarity. Though the day was gaining attention, it was mostly for the wrong reasons. Jokes, satire, parody and derision were all that the day was commemorated for.

In 1913, a bill in accordance with making the day official was introduced. The idea was approved by US President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Later, in 1924, the idea gained further momentum as it was supported by President Calvin Coolidge. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. However, it was thirty years later that a Joint Resolution of Congress gave recognition to Father's Day. Another 16 years passed before President Richard Nixon established the third Sunday of June, as a permanent national observance day of Father's Day in 1972.

DR. HELEN C. ESTRELLA TURNS ANOTHER GRACEFUL YEAR ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

In Greek, the name Helen means- light. The name Helen orginated as an Greek name. The name Helen is most often used as a girl name or female name.

English form of the Greek ‘Ελενη (Helene), probably from Greek ‘ελενη (helene) "torch" or "corposant", or possibly related to σεληνη (selene) "moon". In Greek mythology Helen was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, whose kidnapping by Paris was the cause of the Trojan War. The name was also borne by the 4th-century Saint Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, who supposedly found the True Cross during a trip to Jerusalem.

The name was originally used among early Christians in honour of the saint, as opposed to the classical character. In England it was commonly spelled Ellen during the Middle Ages, and the spelling Helen was not regularly used until after the Renaissance.

REGISTRATION FOR BARANGAY AND SK ELECTIONS

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has tentatively set the date of the registration for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections from July 1 to 31, a poll official said Tuesday.

Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said that under the law, registration should be conducted 120 days before the elections. In this case, registration should be conducted beginning June 25 because the 2010 SK and Barangay elections have been scheduled on October 25.

But Sarmiento said they moved the registration to July because June 25 is "too soon." "Wala ng time for registration (We might not have enough time for registration)," he told reporters in an interiew. He added that under Republic Act 7166, they can adjust the registration schedule "if necessary."

Sarmiento said those turning 15 and 18 years old should register for the SK and Barangay elections. But he said those who are over 18 and have already registered do not need to register again. He added that they are encouraging those who do not have biometrics to go to local Comelec officers and have their biometrics captured.

On the other hand, Sarmiento said they still have yet to decide whether to automate the October polls. "Yan ang pag uusapan (That's what we'll talk about) But the sentiment is it should be automation. It think that is the trend and the public is expecting that it be automated," he said.

He noted, however, that they have yet to talk with poll machine supplier Smartmatic about engaging in another contract for the SK and Barangay polls. The Philippines paid P7.2 billion to Smartmatic-Total Information Management (TIM) to automate the May 2010 elections.

In a separate interview, Smartmatic Asia president Cesar Flores said they welcome the idea of automating the October elections. He noted, however, that the poll body should set the filing of certificates of candidacy earlier because Smartmatic would need to print more ballot faces if ever.

FORWARDED MESSAGE BY MA'AM EMMA

" Bread cast on the water comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place - And, after all, isn't that what life is all about? "

CHANCELLOR'S MESSAGE

Through time, UC has perservered to grow by leaps and bounds, in numbers and standards. One simple reason for UC's steady growth is the school's unfailing vision to become a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region. While this vision may be met with raised eyebrows, let it be known that many skeptics have already been convinced by the school's version of success-themed stories.

In consonance to this aspiration, UC continues to focus on its resources, both human and technical, towards achieving success in various fields. Success, within the context of UC experience, is the school's clearcut response to the demands of time. With its functional and ground-breaking curricula and "well-oiled" machineries, UC thus creates a learning environment equal to the necessities of the 21st century.

UC's continuing efforts towards making itself the finest is predicated on the now popular byword of the academe: I CARE. In capsule, this acronym speaks about the core values of Innovation, which is geared towards technological advancement; Camaraderie, which is founded on the spirit of mutual trust, harmony and understanding; Alignment, which places UC in correct positioning in relation to others, be it within or outside; Respect, which puts a premium on the practice of professionalism; and Excellence, which is the exceptional quality that makes UC distinct right from the very start.

Having this as its general picture, UC invites you then to take part in its continuing journey towards its envisioned direction.

TRAGEDY

Authorities scoured a deep ravine in the central Philippines as the toll from a deadly bus crash involving a group of Iranian students and tourists rose to 21, police said.

The bus was carrying a group of Iranian medical and nursing students and their relatives when it careened off the cliff and into a ravine 30 feet (nine metres) deep in the central island of Cebu Sunday, police said.

"The bus lost its brakes and fell into the ravine," provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Erson Digal said.

FLAG CAMPAIGN: BUHAYIN ANG TIWALA SA SARILI

"A nation is born into freedom on the day when such a people, moulded into a nation by a process of cultural evolution and sense of oneness born of common struggle and suffering, announces to the world that it asserts its natural right to liberty and is ready to defend it with blood, life, and honor."

PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY

The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in Cavite II el Viejo (now Kawit), Cavite, Philippines. With the public reading of the Act of the Declaration of Independence, Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain, which had been recently defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

In the presence of a huge crowd, independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898 between four and five in the afternoon in Cavite at the ancestral home of General Emilio Aguinaldo some 30 kilometers South of Manila . The event saw the unfurling of the National Flag of the Philippines, made in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herboza, and the performance of the Marcha Filipina Magdalo, as the Nation's National Anthem, now known as Lupang Hinirang, which was composed by Julián Felipe and played by the San Francisco de Malabon marching band.

TO THE NEWLY-CAPPED AND BADGED STUDENT NURSES OF UC BANILAD ...

THE HOUSE OF 1000 MIRRORS

Long ago in a small, far away village, there was place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit.

When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often."

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet?

THE WONDER OF WONDERING WHY

WHAT'S THE WORTH?

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

For cutting the grass: 5.00
For cleaning up my room this week: 1.00
For going to the store for you: 0.50
Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: 0.25
Taking out the garbage: 1.00
For getting a good report card: 5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: 2.00
Total:
14.75

His mother picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote:

For the nine months I carried you while you inside me: No Charge
For all the nights that I've sat up with you: No Charge
For everyday that I doctored and prayed for you: No Charge
For all the trying times: No Charge
For all the nights filled with worries: No Charge
For the toys, food, clothes: No Charge
For wiping your nose and face: No Charge
Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge

When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: "PAID IN FULL".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAWN!

TURN OFF THE LIGHT

Small as a peanut,
Big as a giant,
We're all the same size
When we turn off the light.

Rich as a sultan,
Poor as a mite,
We're all worth the same
When we turn off the light.

Red, black or orange,
Yellow or white,
We all look the same
When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way
To make everything right
Is for God to just reach out
And turn off the light!

COMMITMENTS

Commitment means to show loyalty, duty or pledge to something or someone, and can refer to ~~ personal commitment, interaction dominated by obligations. These obligations may be mutual, or self-imposed, or explicitly stated, or may not. Distinction is often made between commitment as a member of an organization, and a personal commitment, which is often a pledge or promise to ones' self for personal growth.

CEBUANO RECORDS RARE JUPITER IMPACT

At exactly 20:31 UT (Universal Time) of June 3, 2010, Filipino amateur astronomer Christopher Go captured a rare phenomenon that is now being talked about by professional and fellow amateur astronomers.

Armed with a video camera and a powerful telescope, he recorded a flash of light on Jupiter. According to an article published on spaceweather.com, the nature of the impact is unknown but it could have been an asteroid or a comet slamming into the planet.

Go and Anthony Wesley, an Australian amateur astronomer, independently witnessed this rare event. Go, who is based in Cebu, two “planetary imagers” are currently based in his province. He started out with 10 x 40 binoculars and later more powerful telescopes. He is currently using a Celestron C11 for planetary imaging, according to his online profile.

Go’s recently published discovery was not his first. On February 24, 2006, Go also discovered what astronomers fondly call the “Red Spot Jr.” on Jupiter, which is literally a spot on Jupiter which has about the same diameter as Earth.

According to the Sky & Telescope article, Go sent out his discovery through the Jupiter Section of the Association of the Lunar and Planetary Observers, which confirmed his discovery.

Go, who is an owner of a furniture manufacturing company in Cebu, has been observing Jupiter and Saturn. In 2008, he received the prestigious Walter Haas Award from the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observer.

“I’m proud to be Filipino and to be able to do this for our country,” Go said when asked how he felt about being recognized for his recently published discovery.

CITY SCHOLARS ACCEPTED IN UC

Cebu City’s financially challenged high school graduates need not worry about tuition fees. The city government has kept its promise to provide them with scholarships. The city government yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with 14 partner universities, colleges and vocational schools in their scholarships program.

The MOA, which was signed at the office of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, states that the schools will accept all the city's scholars for one academic year. After this period, the student will be assessed for continued scholarship, vice mayor elect Augustus Joy Young, city consultant on education said. Young said that based on the MOA, the school can charge the city with a maximum amount of P10,000 for each student’s tuition.

Every student from the mountain barangays will be alloted P20,000 – P10,000 for their tuition and another P10,000 in allowances at P1,000 each month. Young said that he will still meet with the schools on the specifics of handing out the allowances. Vouchers had been given to Cebu City public high school graduates during their graduation, Young said. A voucher is presented to the partner school where the student wishes to be enrolled together with the school’s requirements for enrollment.

Even before the MOA signing yesterday, Young said about 2,000 high school graduates availed the program and enrolled in accredited schools. Some 800 students were enrolled in Cebu Technical University, least 700 in University of Cebu and about 300 in the Cebu Institute of Technology.
