Commitment means to show loyalty, duty or pledge to something or someone, and can refer to ~~ personal commitment, interaction dominated by obligations. These obligations may be mutual, or self-imposed, or explicitly stated, or may not. Distinction is often made between commitment as a member of an organization, and a personal commitment, which is often a pledge or promise to ones' self for personal growth.

CEBUANO RECORDS RARE JUPITER IMPACT

At exactly 20:31 UT (Universal Time) of June 3, 2010, Filipino amateur astronomer Christopher Go captured a rare phenomenon that is now being talked about by professional and fellow amateur astronomers.

Armed with a video camera and a powerful telescope, he recorded a flash of light on Jupiter. According to an article published on spaceweather.com, the nature of the impact is unknown but it could have been an asteroid or a comet slamming into the planet.

Go and Anthony Wesley, an Australian amateur astronomer, independently witnessed this rare event. Go, who is based in Cebu, two “planetary imagers” are currently based in his province. He started out with 10 x 40 binoculars and later more powerful telescopes. He is currently using a Celestron C11 for planetary imaging, according to his online profile.

Go’s recently published discovery was not his first. On February 24, 2006, Go also discovered what astronomers fondly call the “Red Spot Jr.” on Jupiter, which is literally a spot on Jupiter which has about the same diameter as Earth.

According to the Sky & Telescope article, Go sent out his discovery through the Jupiter Section of the Association of the Lunar and Planetary Observers, which confirmed his discovery.

Go, who is an owner of a furniture manufacturing company in Cebu, has been observing Jupiter and Saturn. In 2008, he received the prestigious Walter Haas Award from the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observer.

“I’m proud to be Filipino and to be able to do this for our country,” Go said when asked how he felt about being recognized for his recently published discovery.

The faculty members and some key personnel of University of Cebu attended an In-Service seminar at the GV Towers on CHED Updates handled by the CHED Regional Director. She emphasized the core functions of the Commission on Higher Education as well as the areas where the academe and the office that she heads will be working together for the benefit of the students.

CITY SCHOLARS ACCEPTED IN UC

Cebu City’s financially challenged high school graduates need not worry about tuition fees. The city government has kept its promise to provide them with scholarships. The city government yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with 14 partner universities, colleges and vocational schools in their scholarships program.

The MOA, which was signed at the office of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, states that the schools will accept all the city's scholars for one academic year. After this period, the student will be assessed for continued scholarship, vice mayor elect Augustus Joy Young, city consultant on education said. Young said that based on the MOA, the school can charge the city with a maximum amount of P10,000 for each student’s tuition.

Every student from the mountain barangays will be alloted P20,000 – P10,000 for their tuition and another P10,000 in allowances at P1,000 each month. Young said that he will still meet with the schools on the specifics of handing out the allowances. Vouchers had been given to Cebu City public high school graduates during their graduation, Young said. A voucher is presented to the partner school where the student wishes to be enrolled together with the school’s requirements for enrollment.

Even before the MOA signing yesterday, Young said about 2,000 high school graduates availed the program and enrolled in accredited schools. Some 800 students were enrolled in Cebu Technical University, least 700 in University of Cebu and about 300 in the Cebu Institute of Technology.

UNIVERSITY OF CEBU TOPS THE LIST

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) named the country’s top-performing schools, including those from Cebu that are offering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing for 2009.

These schools rated higher than 40.70% national passing average set by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the school’s number of exam takers in the recent results of the licensure examinations for Nursing.

As per www.prc.gov.ph, the top Cebu nursing schools for 2009 for Range 1 (with 1,000 and up takers) area University of Cebu (Region 7) with 829 out of 1,529 or 54.22%; University of San Carlos (Region 7) with 508 out of 1005 or 50.55%; and the University of the Visayas-Mandaue City (Region 7) with 679 out of 1,485 or 45.72%.
