UNIVERSITY OF CEBU SLASHES DOWN TUITION; FREEZES OTHER FEES

University of Cebu, through two of her leading administrators---Vice Chancellor for Administration Atty. Nendell Hanz Abella and Executive Vice Chancellor Atty. Baldomero Estenzo—trouped to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region 7 Office to formally file the university’s application to reduce and freeze tuition fees. The move reduces P2 from every unit enrolled by incoming freshmen. It will also freeze miscellaneous and laboratory rates of other college year levels as well as freeze the tuition fees of second year students until their graduation.

“This will be a model for other schools, not only in region 7,” informed Dr. Candelario Aytona, Region 7 CHED Director. He is optimistic this will keep, return students back to, and even uplift the enrollment of the school, in spite of the current global fiscal crisis.

“It is a way of expressing Atty. Go’s sympathy with the people during this trying time,” explained Atty. Abella of the university’s move, while referring to UC President and known philanthropist Atty. Augusto W. Go.

UC will be offering the following privileges for SY 2009-2010.

Reduced Tuition Fee on all programs by Php 2.00 per unit based on SY 2008-2009 rate for all incoming freshmen
Freeze Tuition Fee from second year until graduation
Freeze Miscellaneous and Laboratory Fees until graduation
Privilege will be offered to:
All freshmen of SY 2009-2010, provided that they will finish the course at the prescribed number of years.
All students will full load

Basis of reduction is SY 2008-2009 tuition fee rates

Effectivity of Privilege
A student must pursue the Academic program from freshman to fourth or fifth year without shifting to another Course otherwise he/she will lose the privilege.
If the student drops or discontinues his/her studies within the duration of the Program he/she has enrolled, said student waives his/her right to this privilege.
A student must abide the regulations of this educational institution and that any violation made will terminate the privilege availed.

UC WATCH: What’s your message for those who intend to pursue the profession?

DEAN ESTRELLA: “We will provide them with the best learning experience here at UCCN. It’s not about the number (of passers) alone. Rather, it’s in the university’s aggressiveness in pursuing instructional strategies to enhance learning and likewise in expanding our linkages. We have the biggest number of affiliating agencies to enrich our students’ learning.

No amount of convincing is enough, except when they are in the actual soil of UCCN. We will make their learning experience worthwhile. We will exert the most effort in assisting them, to transform them to be better nurses and be one of the most sought-after medical professionals in the field.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAISY!

UC Nursing CESDEV warmly greets one of its volunteers, Daisy Dela Cerna, a very Happy Birthday! Daisy is a second year student nurse of UC Banilad College of Nursing and is one of the five UC Banilad Nursing students who became a celebrated priest’s “angels” and were featured in his homily, after the girls found and returned Reverend Fr. Jerry Orbos' wallet.

Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD, visited Cebu and was in Gaisano Country Mall. He first bought a bottle of water at the food court and proceeded to purchase some items at the department store when he realized he lost his wallet. With a prayer on his lips, he rushed back to the Foodcourt where five Nursing students, upon seeing him looking like he lost something, inquired and handed him the wallet. In his delight, he invited the female students to his evening mass at the Sacred Heart Parish, where he shared his experience in his homily to the applauding churchgoers.

“I would like to praise and thank the Lord for the meekness and purity of heart of my newfound friends who not only gave me my wallet back, but who also gave me renewed hope and confidence in the youth of our land.”

The Municipality of Ronda which is 81.5 Kms. away and is two and a half hour ride from Cebu City is situated in the southwest coast of Cebu Province. THE VOLUNTEERS - THE GRADUATES

IMMERSION 2009

The main purpose of "immersion" is to provide the student nurses an actual, first-hand experience of community life so that they can better understand the lives that community people are having. This also provides an oportunity for the student nurses to venture beyond the campus and extend to the community the very much needed medical attention and nursing care.

To all CESDEV Nursing volunteers who will have their Immersion activities, take it as a meaningful way of enjoying Summer 2009. God bless you!

ENJOY SUMMER

WHEN the sun starts biting, you know it’s summer in the Philippines. Not that the sun never bites at other times, but it’s between the months of March and June that the sun is at its fiercest.

Forget Celsius and Fahrenheit; they just confuse you with degrees this and degrees that. The better measure is the OK scale to measure temperature.

Squinting eyes: Good for walking barefoot in the beach.

Umbrellas up: Fine day for a bowl of halo-halo.

Needle-prick sensation: This is the time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The sun’s rays can cause cancer at these hours. Better run to the shade and wear a hat when you’re in the beach.

Temper tantrum alarm. The sun is at its meanest. Better get out of the way of that person. Go to your room and play your favorite computer game.

Lechon skin. Oops, you overdid it, man. Better got to your dermatologist. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours.

Cool activities to do this summer.

Go play a kite. The best time to fly a kite is in summer because that’s when the wind blows hardest. Open spaces, like the beach and the park, offer the best venue. Stay away from live wires and electric posts to avoid accidental electrocution. Forewarned is forearmed. Fly kites with your friends or family so you can have a cheap but memorable summer scrapbook in your mind.

Go see a freebie. There are a lot of free shows at the local malls this summer. No one will think you are scrimping on money. In fact, people will think you are a fun guy giving his girlfriend a nice treat.

Why not complete the package with free samples! Malls have these little food carts that give away free samples of their products, like coffee, tea, juice, ice cream and sandwiches.
Cheap thrills. Pack a basket — fill it with frozen yogurt drink or juice, sandwiches, cookies, maybe sweet white wine, and fruits — and drive to the nearest public beach. Build castles made of sand, play volleyball and generally just forget that you are a Charlie Brown type to your colleagues.

Hike with your friends, or go jogging with them near dusk. The world is your playpen.

Uploading of the files has encountered some delays due to the intermittent connectivity of Wi-Fi signal in UC Banilad. UC Nursing CESDEV has placed some measures to address this technical glitch. Please see Mr. Quitco to know what these measures are.

APRIL HOLIDAYS

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos will enjoy two successive long weekends starting this week, after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared Monday a holiday. Pursuant to her “holiday economics,” Arroyo declared Monday, April 6 a holiday since Araw ng Kagitingan, which recalls the bravery of World War II veterans, would fall on Holy Thursday. This is contained under Proclamation 1699, which lists down all the holidays for 2009. There will be only two working days next week, Tuesday (April 7) and Wednesday (April 8). Thursday and Friday are regular holidays as part of the Catholics’ commemoration of the Lenten season.

UC Nursing CESDEV has released the clearances of BSN 2C, BSN 3P, BSN 3V, BSN 4A, BSN 4BB, BSN 4E, BSN 4L, BSN 4M, BSN 4O, BSN 4Q, and BSN 4Y. Please coordinate with your Class Vice President on your CESDEV Clearances. UC Nursing CESDEV requires that you go over the Certificates of Community Service and CESDEV Clearances first and check if the names are properly spelled. If you notice wrong entries or misspelled names, do not print the document. Immediately visit and inform CESDEV office so that the error will be promptly addressed and a new file will be uploaded.
