RECORDING SESSION

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Lift up your eyes and look. For who made the stars but He who drills them like an army calling each one by name. So mighty is His power, so great His strength, that not one fails to answer.

— Isaiah 40:26

God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share His wisdom and become one with Him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE VALUE OF TIME

ANOTHER LONG WEEKEND!

The Palace declared that November 29 will be a regular non-working holiday in commemoration of Bonifacio Day. Bonifacio Day actually falls on November 30. However, Proclamation 1841, issued in July 2009, moves the celebration of the said holiday to the nearest Monday.

Another long weekend! Yipeee!

DAGHANG SALAMAT, KAPAMILYA!

UC Nursing CESDEV heartily thanks all the student nurse volunteers who rendered service during the Grand Halad Sa Kapamilya in Mabolo Elementary School. Over 10,000 people benefited from the various services offered during the whole day activity.

Bantay Bata has offices in the major cities in the Philippines which allows it to respond immediately to the emergency calls. They are also able to offer online counseling for child-family relationships and assist victims of child sexual exploitation.

The program also works with the national and local government agencies such as, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (Philippines) (DSWD). From its establishment, Bantay Bata has become one of the most widely supported causes in the Philippines.

O Santo Nino, who has said,

"Ask and you shall receive;

SEND-OFF MASS FOR CESDEV-NURSING VOLUNTEERS

UC Nursing CESDEV will be offering a mass for the volunteers who will be taking the Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination this December. You are welcome to join us as we pray for their success. Mass will be at 4:00 PM in Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino. A bus is available in Sitio Baca and will leave at 3:30 PM for this.

EXAM REMINDERS

As graduate nurses of UC Banilad College of Nursing are about to go on Intensive In-House Review, we are posting some important reminders for those who will be taking the Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE) this December 2010.

BEFORE YOUR EXAM:

1) Be sure to check the location of your assigned testing area. Be aware of the travel time, traffic situation and other factors that may delay you on the day of the exam.

2) Check all necessary materials that you will need including your uniform, pencils and ball pens, NOA, receipt, envelopes etc.

3) Sleep early on the night before the exam and when you wake up have a healthy breakfast.

DURING YOUR EXAM:

4) Synchronize your watch with your facilitator, keep track of time and manage it wisely.

5) Listen to the facilitator and read the instructions. If you have any questions ask your facilitator and not your co-examinees. Before you start the exam, clarify rules and protocols.

6) Be sure to input your name and other exam details properly, your facilitator will guide you on this.

7) Again, manage your time wisely, don't spend too much time on a question you can't answer. Make an EDUCATED GUESS, this means that you must use your test taking strategies. Cancel unrelated options, use your ABC (airway breathing circulation), use your Maslow's hierarchy of needs, etc. etc. If you finish your test early, go over your answers. Don't leave any questions unanswered.

8) Check if you are shading the right number, you might be shading a number different from the question you are reading. Always be careful.

9) Always remember your goals in life, you are a step away from your goals and dreams. Be confident, now is the chance to show everything that you have learned in school. Whether you make it or not, what's important is to give your best.

10) Pray to God that He may lend you His wisdom and knowledge. Ask Him to guide you on this important day of your life!

"Health, happiness and success depend upon the fighting spirit of each person. The big thing is not what happens to us in life - but what we do about what happens to us." George Allen

Good Luck and may God Bless you all!

DECEMBER TAKERS, WATCH THIS!

CESDEV-NURSING WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE GRAND HALAD SA KAPAMILYA

CESDEV-Nursing volunteers will join ABS-CBN Cebu as it holds Grand Halad sa Kapamilya, a festival of free services (like medical, dental, legal, laboratory and veterinary services) and one-stop shop of the most significant government services (like DFA passporting, LTO licensing, Pag-ibig Housing Loan seminar and processing of SSS, GSIS, PhilHealth and NSO transactions) for the poorest of the poor in Cebu and Central Visayas this Saturday in Mabolo Elementary School.

Started in 2005, Halad has become an institution of service showcasing the unparalleled generosity of the private sector and government agencies, making DYAB and ABS-CBN Cebu truly a bridge between those who can help and those who need help. Target is to serve up to 5,000 patients for the medical and dental services.

SUCCESS

SALUTE TO A TRUE GENTLEMAN IN THE RING

As a man who uses his fists to make a statement, Manny Pacquiao would seem to be a very unlikely source for a quotable quote, especially since, despite some improvement in his English, he is not exactly very facile with the language.

Yet Manny gave probably one of the best post-fight quotes to emerge in the entire history of professional boxing. And it came just after he gave Mexican Antonio Margarito a beating to win a record 8th world title in as many different weight divisions.

Mario Lopez asked Manny if, in the 11th round when he was seen motioning to the referee, he had wanted the fight stopped at the point, given that Margarito was already bloodied, with one eye closed and the other about to follow suit.

Manny answered that he just wanted referee Larry Cole to check on the condition of Margarito and see if it was wise for him to continue considering the punishment he was getting. He said he was concerned because "boxing is not for killing each other."

With those words, Manny showed true professionalism, and an uncanny capacity to remain humane despite the violence that is a necessary part of the sport he has chosen. Indeed, Lopez again asked Manny if, in the 12th and last round, he was actually holding back as many thought.

Manny confirmed this. He said that at that point, with his victory already assured as early as several rounds back, he saw no point in going for a knockout. "I just wanted to finish the round and get it over quick, so I just moved around and threw punches just to keep him back."

Many fans of Manny, including those who cannot avoid placing bets on every fight of his, must have been anticipating a knockout and must have been disappointed that the Filipino boxer failed to just even knock Margarito down.

That is something that you just had to give to Margarito. Taking account the numerous solid punches to the head that Manny dealt Margarito, one has to give the Mexican credit for having such a granite chin. Manny's record would show other boxers have fallen from fewer shots.

But even without a single knockdown, the latest win by Manny was very impressive, especially since he won an unprecedented 8th title in an 8th different weight class. But most impressive of all was his humaneness, a true gentleman in the ring.

PACQUIAO WINS 8TH WORLD BOXING TITLE, CONGRATULATIONS!

Underscoring his tag as the world's best pound for pound fighter, Filipino ring hero Manny Pacquiao bucked a size disadvantage to outclass Antonio Margarito of Mexico and claim the WBC super welterweight crown, his eighth weight crown, at Cowboys Stadium in Texas Saturday night (Sunday here).

“I got hurt once one round I recovered right away I really trained hard for this fight. I sacrificed a lot for this fight,” said Pacquiao after the fight.

There was no knockdown but Pacquiao, despite giving up close to 20 pounds in weight, proved dominant throughout the bout set at a catch weight of 150 lbs. Unlike Joshua Clottey who refused to engage Pacquiao, Margarito gamely fought his heart out against the Filipino champion. In the end, however, his face was reduced into a bloody mess.

Pacquiao went through the motions in the final round, with the outcome all but wrapped up in the first 11 rounds. Margarito took heavy shots but stayed on his feet. Pacquiao completes his classy performance with a late combination that lands flush on Margarito's face.

PACQUIAO FIGHTS MARGARITO TODAY

Manny Pacquiao takes another bold step toward sports immortality when he tangles with Antonio Margarito for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight crown on Saturday night (this morning in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington City.

The 31-year-old representative of Sarangani province and holder of a record seven world crowns in as many divisions will make history as the first nationally elected official to compete in a boxing championship as soon as he trades punches with the taller and bigger boxer from Mexico.

The Philippines’ pride, despite yielding 4 1/2 inches in height, 6 inches in reach and more than 10 pounds in weight by fight night, is an overwhelming 5-1 favorite to trounce Margarito and remain the world’s pound-for-pound king.

NOVEMBER 16, HOLIDAY!

Malacañang on Wednesday has declared November 16, Tuesday, a National Holiday in celebration of the Islamic religious holiday Eid'l Adha.

The announcement of the holiday was made through Proclamation Number 60, signed by the President on Tuesday. The date is a nonworking holiday. The proclamation said the date was confirmed by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF).

Republic Act 9849 stipulates that Eid'l Adha (sometimes spelled Eid al-Adha, Eid ul Adha or Eid-u'z-Zuha, meaning the Feast of Sacrifice), one of the major religious feasts in Islam, shall be observed as a national holiday.

The holiday commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his own son, Ishmael (or Ismail), upon the command of Allah. The feast starts at the end of the Hajj (the annual pilgrimage of Muslims to the Holy City of Mecca). It is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the Zhul Hijja, the 12th and last month of the lunar Islamic calendar.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ...

One day, a wealthy family man took his son on a trip to the country so he could have his son see how poor country people were.

They stayed one day and one night in the farmhouse of a very humble farm. On the way back home at the end of the trip the father asked the son, "What did you think of the trip?"

The son replied, "Very nice, Dad."

The father then asked, "Did you notice how poor they were?"

The son replied, "Yes, I guess so."

The father then added, "And what did you learn?"

To this question, the son thought for a moment and answered slowly, "I learned that we have one dog in the house and they have four. We have a fountain in the garden and they have a stream that has no end.

"We have fancy lanterns in our garden, while they have the stars. Our garden goes to the edge of our yard, but for their back yard, they have the entire horizon!"

At the end of the son's reply, the rich father was speechless. His son then added: "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we really are."

THE STUDENT NURSES WHO JOINED THE CHRISTMAS CHRISMS BOP LAUNCH

These student nurses of UC Banilad College of Nursing shared their voices and joined SM Supermalls as they give this year's Christmas a twist when it launched its very first SM Christmas jingle.

Aptly dubbed "Christmas ChriSMs - it boasts of a blast of multi-layered blending with a fun beat, translated to a fast-paced animated shortfilm, ChriSMs express the fabulous, dizzying Christmas frenzy that most of us enjoy. May the spirit last the whole year through, the next year through and may the cycle never end!

CHRISTMAS CHRISMS BOP

UC STUDENTS SING THE SM CHRISTMAS JINGLE

ENCHANTING CHRISTMAS

UC student nurses will be joining an Enchanting Christmas in SM Cebu tomorrow. They are getting ready for something enchanting as SM City Cebu's most joyful Christmas celebration comes to life on November 6, 5PM at the Northwing Atrium.

These talented students nurses will be showcasing their stuff worth watching at the launching of SM Supermalls' Christmas ChriSMs Jingle with the 250 voices of the UC Chorus and Mr. Luke Mejares. This Christmas Jingle singing will be performed simultaneously in all SM stores nationwide and aims to claim a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records.

Also to be witnessed is the Grand Launch & Ceremonial Lighting of the Enchanted Christmas Forest, 6PM at the Northwing Atrium. This would be another feat as SM malls also simultaneously light up a total of 10,000 lights on their Christmas Trees.

These activities will be made more enchanting with the live performance of Cebu's top musical and dance groups --- enchanting voices of the UC Chorus, fairy ballerinas from the Ballet Center, and the magical music of the Peace Philharmonic Double Quartet.

Truly, it would be an enchanting Christmas at SM City Cebu so be there and celebrate the most joyful season of the year!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MA'AM APUHIN!

WE ARE ONE

One bread,
One body,
One people,
United we stand,
Divided we fall
If we put our trust
in the Lord
There'll be melody,
love and harmony,
in every heart.

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.

Amen.
