SEMINARY VISIT

23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23-24 (New International Version)

The graduate nurses of University of Cebu who are currently staying in Seminario Mayor de San Carlos for their Intensive In-House review for the Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination this coming June 6 and 7, 2009 were delighted and touched with the show of support from CESDEV-Nursing.

The streamers and the accompanying messages are UC Nursing CESDEV's simplest ways of acknowledging the contributions of these graduate nurses - greatly helping CESDEV-Nursing achieve its goals and purposes. As they embark on the PNLE, we are assured that they will be truly guided by the Holy Spirit and will be abundantly blessed for they have served the community and their fellowmen through their numerous outreach activities - they will surely receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.

WE PASS THIS WORLD BUT ONCE ...

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

TOGETHER IN THE JOURNEY OF LIFE

NOTE TO GOD (LYRICS)

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino singer Charice Pempengco has scored another triumph in her international career when her single “Note to God,” released only in the United States, broke into the Amazon.com and iTunes music charts.

Amazon is America’s largest online retailer, while iTunes accounts for 70 percent of worldwide sales of digital downloads and is the No. 1 music vendor globally. “Note to God” is currently No. 2 on Amazon’s MP3 Downloads Bestsellers and Hot New Releases section, and No. 1 on the Movers and Shakers, or the biggest gainer in sales rank as of Tuesday. It is also No. 9 on the iTunes chart. The song is partly an emotional prayer whose lyrics are about what one would say in a letter to God.

It has just been posted on YouTube—the video-sharing website where the world discovered Charice—and is the first single in her forthcoming debut album being produced by her musical mentor, David Foster. It is actually a cover version of a composition by Diane Warren (who also wrote Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing;” Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me;” and Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart”).

The 16-year-old Charice first sang the song on America’s highest-rating TV show “Oprah” only on Monday—the day it was also released as a digital download. On the Amazon Bestsellers chart, “Note to God” ranks behind the Black Eyed Peas’s “Boom Boom Pow” but has overtaken Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face,” Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” Beyoncé’s “Halo,” and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” On the iTunes chart, Charice’s single is ahead of Eminem’s “Beautiful.”

Charice was again featured in a high-profile show on May 9 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she performed with Foster in a tribute concert for Celine Dion.

If I wrote a note to God
I would speak whats in my soul
I'd ask for all the hate to be swept away,
For love to overflow
If I wrote a note to God
I'd pour my heart out on each page
I'd ask for war to end
For peace to mend this world
I'd say, I'd say, I'd say
Give us the strength to make it through
Help us find love cause love is over due
And it looks like we haven't got a clue
Need some help from you
Grant us the faith to carry on
Give us hope when it seems all hope is gone
Cause it seems like so much is goin wrong
On this road we're on
If I wrote a note to God
I would say what on my mind
I'd ask for wisdom to let compassion rule this world
Until these times
If I wrote a note to God
I'd say please help us find our way
End all the bitterness, put some tenderness in our hearts
And I'd say, I'd say, I'd say
Give us the strength to make it through
Help us find love cause love is over due
And it looks like we haven't got a clue
Need some help from you
Grant us the faith to carry on
Give us hope when it seems all hope is gone
Cause it seems like so much is goin wrong
On this road we're on
No, no no no
We can't do this on our own
SoGive us the strength to make it through
Help us find love cause love is over due
And it looks like we haven't got a clue
Need some help from you
Grant us the faith to carry on
Give us hope when it seems all hope is gone
Cause it seems like so much is goin wrong
On this road we're on
If I wrote a note to God

ADPCN SUMMER 2009 CONFERENCE

May 20, 2009, 4:45pm
http://www.mb.com.ph/node/201349

In keeping with its organizational objectives, the Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADCPN) will convene today and tomorrow (May 21 and May 22) for a two-day Summer Conference at the historic landmark Manila Hotel.

The conference aims to enable the participating nursing education officials to effectively and efficiently implement the Enriched Bachelor of Science in Nursing Curriculum for the Academic Year 2009-2010 and further the core competencies of prospective nurses, especially in the care of mothers in labor and delivery, the immediate care of the newborn, and intra-operative care.

The two-day workshop starts with the road map labeled as the Philippine Education Highway, whose goal is to further the standards of nursing education so that the credentials of future nurses will be recognized in other countries. There will be a presentation of the Enriched Bachelor of Science in Nursing Curriculum that was covered by an earlier memorandum from the Commission on Higher Education and is to take effect by the start of the incoming academic year. This will be followed by an interactive discussion between the members of the Board of Nursing and the participating deans.

The second day of the workshop will be devoted to discussing the future directions of the Association and concurrent sessions on teaching strategies on health assessment and the theoretical foundations of nursing.

FRIENDSTER BULLETIN FROM DANIEL

MESSAGE

While each is striving to achieve personal success, it would also be best to go out and serve others. Service to others does not mean quid pro quo - doing a deed in return for an equal or similar deed. Service to others is about unselfish kindness and generosity, acts that validate your good fortune, that give meaning to your lives and, above all, that sustain and dignify the lives of others.

In this regard, no positive acts are insignificant, and no person in need of assistance is too lowly for your time and attention.

Unselfish service is marked by humility, a hard-to-find trait in this age of egoism, so-called individualism and incivility. Be commited volunteers, to try to comprehend "the need to revitalize our common life as a necessary part of individualism."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NICOLE!

IS IT A HOT OR COLD SUMMER?

Summer 2009 is almost at the finish line. While most of us associate summer with hot sunny days and beaches and ... summer classes (whew!), the weather really plays some nice jokes. While it may be very hot during daytime, the rain also pours heavily during nightime. UC Nursing CESDEV decided to get some umbrellas ... whether its a hot sunny day or a heavy downpour, the umbrellas are going to shelter the volunteers and keep them safe.

BUSH VIEW ON VOLUNTEERS

A volunteer is a person who can see what others cannot see; who can feel what most do not feel. Often, such gifted persons do not think of themselves as volunteers, but as citizens - citizens in the fullest sense: partners in civilization

And to all the mothers in the world, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

WHAT IS 'URBAN FARMING' ?

Urban farming is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in, or around (peri-urban), a village, town or city.[1] Urban farming is generally practiced for income-earning or food-producing activities though in some communities the main impetus is recreation and relaxation[2]. Urban farming contributes to food security and food safety in two ways: first, it increases the amount of food available to people living in cities, and, second, it allows fresh vegetables and fruits and meat products to be made available to urban consumers.
Specifically pointed out by the lecturer during the crash course on urban faming is the utilization of idle lands like the backyard. In this case, tha backyard of the ABS-CBN Visayas complex was transformed into a garden of vegetables and at the same time, serves as a nursery for other variety of vegetables. Because urban agriculture promotes energy-saving local food production, urban and peri-urban agriculture are generally seen as sustainable practices.
ABS-CBN has offered to partner with UC Nursing CESDEV in cultivating an idle land in Cabancalan, Mandaue City. The land has an area of 8,000 square meters and is easily acessible from UC Banilad campus. Moreover, UC Nursing CESDEV will pioneer the activity and will use this 'Urban Farming' activity as a showcase that planting or growing vegetables even in the city is possible

CESDEV VOLUNTEERS' IN-HOUSE INTENSIVE REVIEW

Seminario Mayor de San Carlos and San Carlos Seminary College will take in our graduate nurses into their abode as they are prepped for the June 2009 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE). More than 300 graduate nurses will have their intensive board examination review sessions inside the seminary, away from the distractions of the "outside world". Among those who will be preparing for the board exam are CESDEV Senior volunteers Lian Ramirez and Jazer Cuervo. Hey, you storm your brains with all the nursing concepts while we storm the heavens with prayers. Good luck and God bless!

PRAYER FOR MIDTERM EXAMS

Loving God
be with me now,
as I prepare for my exams.
Thank you
for the many talents
and gifts you have given me
and for the opportunity of education.
Calm my nerves and anxiety,
help me to remember all that I have studied,
to express it clearly
and to answer the questions
the very best that I can.
Holy Spirit,
sit with me in my exam- and always.
In Jesus' name
Amen.

CONGRATULATIONS PACMAN!

(Philippine Daily Inquirer) MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 4) Manny Pacquiao beat Ricky Hatton via technical knockout in the second round Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Las Vegas, Nevada, snatching the light welterweight crown and carving his name as one of the legends in boxing history.

Pacquiao matched a boxing record by taking the title in his sixth different weight class.
The Filipino superstar knocked the Englishman down twice in the first round and finished off Hatton with a powerful left hand to the head that sent Hatton flat on his back.

MAY 1, LABOR DAY

Araw ng Manggagawa or Labor Day is a non-working holiday celebrated on May 1 of every year in the Philippines. This day is workers all over the country; however, this day is also often marked by demonstrations and rallies as the labor sector airs its grievances.
Labor Day in the Philippines was first celebrated in 1903, when the Philippines was still under U.S. rule. That year, more than a hundred thousand workers organized by the Union Obrero Democratica de Filipinas (UODF) marched to Malacañang on the first of May to demand better working conditions. The American colonial government was alarmed. The Philippine Constabulary, composed of Americans and Filipinos, raided the printing press of UODF and arrested its president, Dominador Gomez, for illegal assembly and sedition.[2]
Ten years later, on May 1, 1913, Congreso Obrero de Filipinas was organized. Led by Herminigildo Cruz, it fought for an eight-hour working day, abolition of child labor, just labor standards for women, and liability of capitalists.[3]

Since then, Labor Day in the Philippines has been commemorated not only with parades and celebrations, but also with rallies and demonstrations of the labor sector. On May 1, 2001, “EDSA III” or “People Power 3” took place; it differed from EDSA One and EDSA Dos in that the main participants were the masa—the supporters of impeached president Joseph Estrada-- against newly installed president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. It started as a demonstration that became a political revolt and degenerated into a riot that left in its wake torched vehicles and garbage along portions of EDSA and Mendiola.[4]
