LIGHTS OFF IN CEBU FOR EARTH HOUR
By Ma. Bernadette A. Parco, Cebu Daily News, First Posted 08:44:00 03/29/09
For one hour last night, lights went off in Cebu city landmarks, parks, shopping malls, hotels and resorts to participate in the global celebration of Earth Hour. About 24 megawatts were saved in Metro Cebu alone for the two Saturdays leading up to yesterday’s event, according to the Visayan Electric Power Co. (Veco).
“This is enough energy to power 24 municipalities,” said Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival.
The switch-off was participated by ecology-conscious advocates in Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay.
“This is the people's call to business, government and political leaders asking them to do something to combat climate change,” said Undersecretary Roy Kyamko of the Department of Engergy. As lights in SM City Cebu were turned off in half of the mall, a countdown was made for the ceremonial turning on of solar lamps for a campaign to use renewable energy.

CEBU GEARS FOR EARTH HOUR 2009
“We must send a strong signal that we need to take action with a unified force,” said Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival during a press conference. “Cebu (city) is consuming 200 megawatts per day. We are targeting a decrease in electricity consumption by 2.5 percent or between six MW and 10 MW this year,” he added.
The campaign mainly addresses the issue on climate change wherein establishments and individuals are encouraged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – the main cause of global warming – by putting off all lights except lamps for security and life-saving purposes.
Nine government agencies, four local government units, two major shopping malls, three business groups, several hotels, resorts and restaurants and seven universities pledged to join the 60-minute activity.
The main program, which is spearheaded by the Department of Energy together with the Cebu City government, will be held at the SM City Cebu. A ceremonial turning off of lights will be held on March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Report by Ma. Bernadette A. Parco, Editorial Assistant, Cebu Daily News.

BE PART OF EARTH HOUR 2009

Earth Hour is about taking simple steps everyday that collectively reduce carbon emissions – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
Here are 10 different ways to spend Earth Hour and reduce your carbon footprint:
1. Attend a local Earth Hour event or organise your own by throwing an Earth Hour street party with your neighbours
2. Gather family & friends for a night picnic in your local park and look at the stars
3. Enjoy a family dinner by candlelight
4. Organise a treasure hunt in the dark
5. Take the dog for a night walk
6. Have a candle-lit bath
7. Sit in the dark and share stories
8. Organise a family night playing board games
9. Share a romantic night in with your loved one
10. Upload your ‘on the night’ photos and videos to flickr and YouTube respectively, and then add them to the Earth Hour flickr group and the global YouTube Group.
Earth Hour Executive Director, Andy Ridley, is encouraging people to participate in whatever way they choose and to think beyond the hour.
“There are no hard and fast rules surrounding participation in Earth Hour. We only ask that you flick that switch and have fun doing whatever you choose to do during that time.
Make Earth Hour work for you. Families with young children should feel free to turn their lights off earlier than 8:30pm and for those having too much fun in the dark during the hour, don’t feel you have to limit yourself to one hour and switch back on at 9:30pm.”
To find out more about Earth Hour, visit the official website www.earthhour.org, sign up and join millions of people in more than 1,400 cities and towns in 80 countries throughout the world by turning off your lights for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday 28 March.

CESDEV IN HARIBON SITE

The Haribon Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources is a membership organization dedicated to the conservation of Philippine biodiversity. It aims to build a constituency for environmental issues that will call for prioritizing conservation actions on habitats and sites, based on solid scientific and socio-economic research. Acknowledged in their Events 2007 post is the help extended by UC Nursing CESDEV volunteers during their program launch in UC Banilad. (Find article below)
Haribon Partners with University of Cebu and University of San Carlos
Posted on 6 May, 2008 - 3:49pm.
In two separate ceremonies, the University of Cebu (UC) and the University of San Carlos (USC) inked partnerships with Haribon to promote biodiversity conservation and align their respective projects in accelerating the youth’s environmental consciousness. From September 19 to 20, Haribon had an exhibit at the UC’s campus’ lobby in Banilad to inform students about rainforestation and the threatened species programs. Yolli Deveza of Haribon, manned the exhibit, which offered Haribon merchandise and Generation Green membership to interested students. Deveza was assisted by student-members of the Community Extensions Services and Development (CESDEV)- a two year old volunteer group doing community work on special education, health and environmental projects in Guadalupe. The Haribon event at UC culminated with a program presentation by Dr. Ruth Guzman, a Haribon consultant, about Cebu’s natural wealth and its dwindling forests. Paul John Gesta of UC and the Ayala Young Leaders Group hosted the program. The presence of Haribon at UC was made possible through the dynamic leadership of Atty. Augusto Go, its president; and Atty. Baldomero Estenzo, Chancellor for External Affairs; together with Sheila Benedicto, campus staff; UC main and Mars Mandal, Director for Student Affairs at UC-Banilad and his staff Collin Garrido and May Casas . On September 21, the University of San Carlos (USC) had one of its memorable events at the Theodore Buttenbruch Hall. Father Roderick Salazar, SVD, president of USC welcomed the signing of commitment between USC and Haribon to work together towards empowering the youth to actively participate in biodiversity conservation projects. It was also the day when students were presented with information on Cebu’s natural wonders and Haribon’s call to help conserve them. Anabelle E. Plantilla and Father Salazar inked the signing of commitment between the organizations. Witnessing the event were the newly-conferred Haribon ambassadors with Nimfa Alo, USC Director for Student Affairs; and Haribon’s Dr. Ruth Guzman and Christine Cenal. The event was also made possible with the coordination of its Vice President, Father Ted Gapuz; Baudric Gothong a USC student and the Ways and Means Commissioner of the Phil. Junior Jaycees; and Ray Dante, president of the Junior Jaycees USC Chapter. Both UC and USC have committed to banner Haribon’s rainforestation initiatives, threatened species programs, and the Generation Green movement in their respective schools. They have committed to work with the private and government sectors in Cebu to push for a greener environment.
